We wanted to get away for a few
days so we headed to Watkins Glen NY. The most notable feature
of the area is the gorge and waterfalls located in the Watkins
Glen State Park. We visited here some years ago at a younger
time in our lives. Hiking UP the gorge trail and then coming
back DOWN was just a little much for us so we were pleased to
hear that there is a $6/pp shuttle to take us to the upper
entry point into the park. We figured hiking down hill would
be easier.
A funny observation… we saw
a man carrying a child in a backpack at the main entrance
when we parked our car. By the time we got the shuttle and
it took us to the top, here was there! We chatted, he sipped
some water, and headed back down. Once upon a time we were
young too.
One way on the trail is about 1-1/2
miles with an elevation change of about 700 feet. Climbing
down into the gorge from the upper entrance involved
navigating Jacob’s Ladder and its 187 steps. Most
of the way is shaded which is nice on a summers day.
Visiting this place isn’t to be missed.
