Intrepid - New York City
September 2006
The aircraft carrier “Intrepid” has been located in New York City for a number of years and I have been talking about a visit. As luck would have it, Kathy was watching the news on a late September Thursday and saw a report on how the coming weekend was the last until Fall 2008. Following the final weekend, the Intrepid was being moved for a two year overhaul. So off we went on a Saturday morning to have a look.
A local bus company makes regularly scheduled commuter trips between Reading and the Port Authority in New York. We looked up the schedule and decided to catch the early bus. There was a 45 minute wait in line at the ship even though we got there early.
Entry onto the ship was through the hanger deck which contained a number of exhibits covering the world situation throughout the ships service. From there we went up to the flight deck which had a number of airplanes on display. Some were carrier based but many were not and were there for display. ie, the “Blackbird”.
We latched onto the tail end of a tour through the “tower” which was very worthwhile. The tour guide was very informative and provided lots of insight into what things were like on the ship. Retired “Intrepid” crew members were at various locations to offer their perspective.
Nothing lower than the hanger deck was open to the general public. The lower decks were open via escorted tour at an additional fee.
Our admission tickets got us access to two displays located on the other side of the pier. A British Airways Concord and an early missile carrying submarine named “The Growler”.
