Biltmore Estate
~ North Carolina ~
October 2006
Kathy and I attended a photography workshop in western North Carolina and traveled through Asheville on the way. Everyone told us that Biltmore Estate was a must see while visiting the area. Biltmore is referred to as "Americas Largest Home".
The workshop was over around noon on Sunday so we headed to Biltmore timing our arrival for 3pm. Tickets purchased after 3pm are good for the next days admission. We spent 2-3 hours on Sunday afternoon outdoors roaming the gardens and pond area. The gardens were a “macro” photography paradise. We expected mums to be in full bloom but were both surprised to see roses!
Picture taking rules covered the extremes. There were no picture taking or tripod restrictions in the out door areas however NO picture taking at all was allowed in the mansion. We were the only ones using tripods in the garden area.
On Monday we re-entered the estate and concentrated on the remaining outdoor areas such as the farm, horse stable, and the winery. It was cold and windy so we were glad the gardens were covered the previous afternoon. We toured the mansion last and decided to spend the extra $7 for the “audio tour” equipment. Well worth the investment. In case you are wondering, the mansion has 240 rooms and the tour took us through 62 of them. If time had permitted I would have found the “behind-the-scenes” tour of interest. The mechanics built into the mansion would have been interesting.
Here are some of the images were took……
