Historic Williamsburg Virginia

May 2007

We talked for several years about making our first trip to Williamsburg but just never got around to it.  The thought of navigating I95 and the beltways around Baltimore and Washington simply turned us off.

As luck would have it we signed up for a weekend photography workshop on Tangier Island Virginia.  To get there involved taking a boat from Reedville VA which is about an hour away from Williamsburg.  We returned to Reedville on a Sunday afternoon and decided to take a few days vacation and visit Historic Williamsburg while in the area.

Our original intention was to spend one day at Williamsburg then the following day at Jamestown or Yorktown.  But everything we read and saw indicated that one day simply wasn't enough so we purchased two day tickets and decided to forgo Jamestown this time around.

As it turns out no tickets are needed to "visit" the historic area however a purchased ticket 1) Gets you tours of various buildings (very worthwhile), 2) A place to park, 3) Shuttle busses to the area.  Besides, the ticket price helps maintain the place.

All of the tours described what life was like for people in various "classes" at the time.  Some of the tours talked about the politics of the day and its impact on merchants and the people.  A must see tour is of the Governor's Mansion.  Tough life.  The Court building and Jail tours and hearing how justice was dished out were very interesting as well.  We even had a visit from George Washington who came to speak to the crowd.  I for one always enjoy looking at the methods used to make things in the old days.

We completed three geocaches located within the historic district.

Here are a few of the images we made during our visit.  Click on any of the pictures for a larger view....

All of course no trip to Williamsburg would be complete without a stop at Williamsburg Pottery Factory.  We ended up finding room for three ceramic flower pots but Kathy kept saying that she should have bought one of those big marble cats she's standing next to.  We took a stroll through their factory before leaving.
